YX doesn’t care about retention of pilots. They’re completely aware of the hiring rush to the majors/LCCs in the foreseeable future. Their goal is to make sure they have a consistent pipeline of new pilots coming in, hence LIFT and management exploring “flow” options, all to continue attracting new hires. I doubt the lifers will get anything out of this CBA.

Some truth to that, but they DO need pilots to stick around long enough to fly as captains for a few years. Their problem now is that FOs are leaving, not captains. They not only need to attract new hires, but they need them to stay long enough to be worth it. If they don’t stay long enough to upgrade, where will the captains come from? Another issue is that we are training FOs and captains as fast as we possibly can, and still can’t grow the seniority list. That problem will only get worse

Personally, I would love to see signing bonuses go away in favor of better payscales. Signing bonuses are so misleading, and the way they amortize them are just a form of golden handcuffs. If they improved the pay significantly enough across the board to keep bodies in the seat longer, they would have less attrition. The only way to do that is to make it less attractive to make a jump to an LCC or ACMI, which hard pay is the only way. If leaving for anything other than the big 3 (plus luv, brown, and purple) is more of a lateral move pay and QOL wise, not as many people would be itching to get out as quickly. That, I believe, is the secret sauce to retention. But I'm probably living in a fantasy world to ever see that come to fruition...
