I talked to a commuter last week who lives in DC and commutes to her base in Seattle because she loves the DC area so much. She said she was on the DC side, across from DCA, and said that it’s a lively area.

We have an apartment in Alexandria and like the neighborhood. One metro stop from DCA. There may be a little more going on there after dark then Crystal City or Arlington. King Street can be especially fun. Even weeknights in the winter time there are still things to do. So if you want to stay on the VA side, Alexandria is great. But I’ve heard good things about the DC side and would be interested to check it out if I were going to be based there.

Crystal city/Potomac is nice but the area seems to shut down after daylight hours?
That side of the river, Clarendon and Ballston are where you want to be if you’re looking for things not shutting down at night. Shirlington, as well, but to a lesser extent. And Old Town (Alexandria) has great places even at night on King Street. Definitely check that out while you’re looking around. Crystal City is a bit blah at the moment but it’s also where Amazon is moving its HQ2 into. So things are going to rapidly change over there the next 2 years on onward.
