Everyone and their grandmother has a “bad back” or any other medical condition for that matter these days. We live in a sue-happy society and unfortunately most of these people get their way and win in the end. The media is thirsty for these amateur videos to boost ratings and the easiest way for corporations to avoid bad PR (the ones that care at least) is to pay out to these low life’s to shut them up. It’s a broken system.

Both of these people are in the wrong, but nobody talks about how the airlines themselves are in the wrong. Continuing to pack paying customers, most of them with very limited options of travel, like sardines in a can leads to lots of frustration in an already stressed environment to begin with. The snack basket and even the free rum won’t cure that discontent if you can’t have your personal space. Unfortunately, the cabin crew are the targets for all this with the threat of losing their job from the slightest negative review by a customer, all while the shareholders are raking in the cash. D, as an example, says they need to pack the seats in to reduce ticket costs for the consumer, but then report a record 1 billion of profit stolen... Looks like there’s some room in that “business model” to free up the cabin a bit.

the customers are not innocent here. Their insatiable drive to scour the internet for the cheapest possible price over the last 20 years is a big reason airplanes are as uncomfortable as they are. The more seats airlines can pack in the cheaper price they can put up on the internet. These same people who complain will end up forgetting and buying a ticket when it is the cheapest one they can find.

Exactly. This is a product of consumer demands and I would argue that the effect of negative PR is basically negligible when passengers search solely based on ticket prices. Everybody was dogging United when the doctor got dragged off the plane but you better believe they're still flying them if it means saving $5.

There's a technical legal term for what he was doing and it's not "punching". It's "assault" consummated by "battery".

You're not allowed to physivally engage someone just to be "annoying". There's a reason for that... small people don't want to be subject to that, and big people will kill you. Western civilization figured out a long time ago to just not go there.

Looks misdemeanor to me, so one year in jail max. I would push for prosecution if someone did that to me. Even if I was in uniform and they were a paying pax on my own airline.

Nah. Don't know where they were, but, not in the state where I worked in LE for 25 years. Harassment at best, which is a disorderly persons offense. The feds would NEVER prosecute something like this.

Yep, would be harassment two at best in NYS (all I can speak to, not smart on federal law). A violation, definitely not a misdemeanor.

Nothing more than a case of two *******s sharing the same air. Match made in heaven, perhaps?

I thought maybe I should explain further when I said the FA was in the wrong. I meant on 2 counts: telling the woman that she couldn't video on board the aircraft, and because she rewarded the guy's bad behavior with some alcohol. I do think the female pax is looking for a payout as well. I don't like the behavior of any of the 3.
