Republic to SELL Frontier

Republic Airways Signs Term Sheet to Sell Frontier Airlines, by Skift - Skift

Gotta love when one jacked up animal tries to sell its dying counterpart. Here! Buy this! You'll lose money and have no idea what to do but give us the money and try!

OnMyWay 07-26-2013 08:15 AM

MSY, here they come!

With A330s, right? That'll work real well. :D

1000 dollars says it Spirit, it would make perfect sense.

Which is why it won't happen.

Maybe Skywest will buy them!

The only valuable assets Frontier has that would appear to interest Spirit (at least, on the face of the deal) are:
  • LGA slots/gate (maybe SAN or LAX gate)
  • DCA slots (Spirit could sell them, or reverse course and operate to DCA again)
  • maybe the CHI - SJD (Cabo) route authority (if this limited, like CHI-CUN, which Frontier lost to AirTran/Southwest)

The rest:
  • Frontier is not a ULCC (management running the show now may want them to be, but they're not currently).
  • Frontier planes have the wrong engines, and are configured wrong (too few seats, they recline, with TV's).
  • DEN is expensive to operate out of, and is already dominated by the world's largest airline (UA) and the US's largest domestic airline (Southwest).
  • Frontier's balance sheet is leveraged, with lots of debt (Spirit is debt free).
  • The current Frontier fleet mix is 319 dominant (Spirit hasn't added a new 319 to the fleet since Feb. 2008).
  • Frontier future delivery positions are superfluous (Spirit has firm orders for 140 aircraft over the next 5 years: 7 A319s [convertible to A320], 53 A320s, 45 A320NEO, and 30 A321s, plus 5 320NEO leases).
  • Frontier has few, if any, route authorities Spirit doesn't already have (Spirit serves more of the Caribbean and Central America than Frontier, Southwest/AirTran, and JetBlue . . . combined)

Not putting down Frontier (good luck, guys), but why would it "make perfect sense" for Spirit to be involved?

thump 07-27-2013 08:16 AM

The DCA slots went back to Airways. They owed us repayment on the $30million loan and so we took E190s from Airways and they received loan forgiveness and the DCA slots

Frontier flies into DCA currently, and they don't do it as 'US Airways Express', they do it as 'Frontier Airlines', with Airbuses. Frontier must have slots @ DCA to do that, I would think.

If Frontier doesn't have DCA slots . . . well, it makes even LESS sense for Spirit to buy them, as 'CanoePilot' speculated.

They operate both the Airbus and Embraer in DCA. The Republic (Frontier) E190 does the DCA-MCI stuff while DCA-DEN is left to the Airbus.

I hope something good works out for F9 folks. Such a great group of people.

UHH. Some F9 pilots have acted like jackasses to the den based rah pilots. It amazes me how one pilot group will take out their frustrations on another pilot group- WAKE up and GROW up- its the CEOs making these decisions.

I have seen nothing but professionalism on both sides of the aisle.

Your full of SH*T on this one! Every jumpseater whether RAH or any OAL has and will always be welcomed on my flight.

RAH transcon commuter here. Nothing but professional and courteous behavior from all the Frontier flight deck crews i interact with from time to time. As I've said many times before, best of luck to you guys and I hope you're picked up by a strong airline with a long and prosperous future.

flyguy23 07-28-2013 08:20 AM

Bolo, while you may not deny a jump seat, some of your brothers have and will. Every airline has their 5%

Bolo, you know for a fact that your fellow pilots have denied jumpseats to our pilots for no other reason than immaturity. Not going to beat a dead horse but there has been several instances of unprofessionalism; probably on both sides.

Please to all posting....read all of TillerEnvy posts!!!! That's all... Thank you

I think the question most people wanna know the answer to is.. will the pilots go with the planes??Not trolling, just looking for FACTUAL information regarding this Q

I agree with you on your post. But to point out a whole group is wrong. There are 2% in every group.

I had nothing but good luck with the jimpseats except once. I thought i hit the 2% , thanked him no matter what and moved on. Some, like a certain ca whose dad works for you as well, went out of his way to get me to work.

I just hope the final outcome will be good for all of us..

Emb170man 07-29-2013 04:25 AM

You heard it here first, AA is the buyer. Frontier has half of the first 60 NEO's to roll off the line, AA wants them. The article talks about the deal being contingent on items out of the hands of both parties (like the merger). Just my guess.

Crew room behavior now! First and foremost there are hardly any RAH crews there anymore. Second, everybody has their own circle of friends. RAH crews hang out in the back and F9 people hang out mostly in front. I am more than happy to share the room with RAH crews but again, you are all mostly in the back room. What do you want me to do? Beg you to come hang out with us? Please tell me about these bitter boxes? If anybody is bitter it is you!
For everybody else at RAH and F9 I wish us all the very best(that even includes Tiller):)

I blame your MEC. For some reason they thought they were better than everyone else. Your just another pilot group at a struggling airline, nothing more, nothing less. The way the Midwest 8 were treated is disgraceful and your MEC should have said so. I was on the streets for 3 years. Its not fun and not easy. I hope you don't have to suffer the same fate.

We are getting way off base here but..."they thought they were better than everyone else"?

Were you present during any of the SLI arbitrations? The YX, Lynx and F9 guys spent the entire time together. A couple of the F9 guys became good friends with the YX reps, others were friends from when they worked at a different airline together. There is no factual basis for the "better than" statement whatsoever.

The "Midwest 8" is definitely a sore spot. I won't beat that dead horse but suffice it to say that the letter that Tony F sent around prior to the hiring of YX pilots explained a much different reality than the dispute submitted by the Midwest Merger Committee to Eischen.

I am sorry to hear that you were on the street for so long, that is a reality all of us (not just F9 pilots) may find waiting just around the corner.

Indigo Partners is buying Frontier... far more likely than AA or anyone else.

TPG bought Midwest. I think we all received a free coffee mug. Than came Seabury.............watch out!!

This. They will some how eliminate all the debt via Bankruptcy, turn them into an ULCC (much like Spirit) go public, make tons of cash and cash out completely 6-7 years from now. I can see them creating an ULCC and maybe wanting to merge with Spirit down the road.

As far as what I can tell, F9 pilots will remain F9 pilots and RAH guys will stay where they currently are?

Doesn't Indigo still own Spirit? Watch then gut F9 then whipsaw you with them. Oh, and of course, they'll sell the NEO delivery slots to AA to raise cash.

Little late to the game! Catch up bud. Indigo just sold its remaining 12million shares and Franke is stepping down from the Board of Directors.
