UPS Plane Crash at CRW

UPS cargo plane crash reported at Yeager Airport | WCHS

This is just breaking.

Looking at flight aware, this looks like it may be a contract carrier a (SNC1260) the aircraft is a Shorts 330 operated by Air Cargo Carriers.

https://www.aircar.com/Home.aspx

Moderators feel free to change the thread title since it is misleading as to the actual carrier.

Local news and officials are now reporting 2 confirmed dead.

Charleston Gazette-Mail | Early morning plane crash leaves two dead at Yeager Airport

News is saying they overran and went off the steep end. Obviously I question anything those jokers report but I wondered how that would happen since that end has EMAS.
Then I google earthed it. Yikes. Tailwinds.

One report said they landed sideways and hit a wing. RIP

This from the P.O.S. airport spokesman Mike Pante

"There's nothing particularly challenging about Yeager Airport for a pilot"

Yeager Airport Crash: Two Killed When Cargo Plane Hits Hillside in West Virginia - NBC News

CRW is definitely on my list of the most challenging airports to fly into. The airport sits on top of a mountain!
Coming in from the south you fly very close to a hill top. From the north you fly over a deep canyon and you feel super high. The winds can be tricky. The airport is also frequently covered by low level fog.

None of that should cause a fatal accident, but it IS Challenging.

It's on the FAA's 121.445 list so it stands out in their eyes.

"I, myself am a commercial pilot," Mike Plante, the airport spokesperson said

Bilsch 05-05-2017 11:52 AM

An airport spokesman should not be voicing opinion on an accident. If he has authority to speak, he should have given only factual information about the airport.

Any accident information should be deferred to those investigating.

Information on the crew and fatalities should have been done by local law enforcement, EMS, FAA, NTSB, or coroner.

FAA/NTSB state the aircraft was approaching performing the VOR-A 05. The tower advised ARFF that the left wing had struck the runway and the fuselage went over the hill to the left of the runway. This according to the Aviation Herald. Very sad.

Wonder what the max tailwind on a Shorts 330 are. The winds were 230 @15 gusting to 23 knots.

KCHS is 337 miles away from the accident airport of KCRW. It was calm winds with 100 scattered 500 overcast.

KCHS is Charleston, SC.

KCRW is Charleston, WV.

Charleston, WV AKA - Charlie West (CRW) is most definitely not Charleston, SC (CHS).

Was the localizer out? Either way the loc or vor a might not be much help if it was 500 ovc.

Airport manager said this crew was from CRW, so they were familiar with the airport. Not sure now often that VOR-A approach is used.

There is a LOC for 05:

LOCALIZER OFFSET ANGLE 001 DEG 26 MIN

NOTAMS for RWY 05:

NTSB says they have security video of the approach/accident.

VOR-a

That VOR-A approach would really suck in bad WX and low vis. Wouldn't even want to try it. I've flown it in a sim a few times. Not a good choice when the Loc 5 is available.
