This is almost too easy to make fun of...

I mean, holy cow... how could you not notice the slow climb, inability to increase airspeed, the CHECKLIST, and OH YEAH... THREE GREEN LIGHTS staring you in the face for that long?

Years ago as a new pilot, I made light of an equally dumb mistake. The veteran pilot I related another's mistake to didn't think it so amusing. He simply stated "Your time will come." A couple decades later it did. While this particular incident might seem amusing, something caused it that we can all learn from or be reminded of...

Yes, I've done it in an airliner too. We figured it out quickly when the climb performance wasn't so great, so at least we were aviating. The after T/O checklist lends itself to complacent execution.

Ladies and Gents, I am not trying to say we don't make mistakes and I am DEFINITELY not perfect either. I have and will make mistakes at times and I hope to always learn from them.

It's just the fact that these signs were seemingly in front of them for several hours. The distance between their departure and their diversion is around 700 miles. Perhaps it's bad juju for me to laugh at this situation because some day the airplane Gods will get me as well. Thank you for your honest response regarding your own situations. I'll shut up now.

"Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Jeeves speaking, how may I assist you?"

Airways Rep: "Yes, good day, we would like to report a case of a captain slapping."

"Captain napping?"

Airways Rep: "Slapping Sir. Or…being in the circumstances of slapping…from her co-pilot."

"I see. An unfortunate case of witness to circumstances arising during one hand clapping."

Airways Rep: "Clapping Sir?"

"Hello, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Jeeves speaking, how may I assist you?"
