I never understood that, either. ATC can’t come up and help you fly-all they need to know is, “I must have traffic priority to land” and “roll the equipment”.

The FAA is not your friend.
You shouldn’t be concerned about the FAA at that point.
If you are really concerned about that you shouldn’t be talking at all because they are going to hear the CVR and ‘see/hear’ everything else too; and we know that isn’t a good plan.

I agree though that s short simple explanation is all that is required and anything ATC and/or the airport can do to help you is all that is required (oh....and I add in any restrictions that I might be dealing with)

I’ll tell you what won’t go over well in any case is trying to hide something.

I completely disagree.
For the purposes of an accident investigation you need as much info as possible.
A remark like “why is it doing THAT” will leave everyone wondering.
“Why is it pitching up” is a much more useful remark.
“We have flight control problems” isn’t nearly detailed enough.
“JFK Departure AA 123 we have roll control problems”

FDR/CVR is for your benefit also.
If you’re so afraid it will be used against you maybe you should have acted a little more professional to begin with.

Issues, RTB communications with ATC? Less said is more with new media outlets / amateurs monitoring the airwaves with scanners.

As far the DCVR? Lessons can be learned to prevent / correct anomalies.

ASAPs are not designed to allow Ops, Mx, and FAA to interface to conduct their investigation which will result in corrections to company procedures, (Ops/Mx) as appropriate,

I doubt the pilot's comment to ATC was intended to put something more on a recorder to be useful information for a later investigation. I also don't think he expected different assistance based on the additional information. It's more likely he was still processing what sort of problem they were facing and just verbalized it. "Thinking out loud," as it were.
