Its possible the runway wasn't closed. Right now in King Salmon, Alaska they're reworking the North end of runway 30. The runway is shortened, but open. You land over the construction equipment.
Taking off on Runway 12, the trucks, graders and other equipment is on the end in the work area. If the airplane won't fly and you have to abort after V1 (See the Yipsilanti MD-80 accident a couple years ago) you're going right through them.
