VAS Aviation has the LiveATC audio up. The "Hold Short" didn't sound garbled to me, don't know why he didn't get it.

It wasn't garbled. But if it had been, would any of us proceed without confirming? Usually I am one of the "don't hang the pilots; let the investigation take care of it" guys. But, geez, that cat has gone through most of his lives.

This sounds like he was distracted by something else.
Cirrus on the same freq cleared to land.
When holding short don’t you sit there if not facing final at least looking at final.
Maybe he was writing on his knee board, in any case loss of situational awareness.

Yeah I don't think he's particularly bad or reckless, just gets attention whenever he does something that would end quietly in ASRS / compliance culture for anyone else.
And he can afford to fly warbirds which were built with wartime expediency (vs. inherent safety) as the priority.
