Smyrna, TN private jet crashes into lake.

IMHO this screams spatial disorientation... :(

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...hes-lake.htmlA small plane carrying Christian diet guru Gwen Shamblin Lara, her husband and five other members of the Remnant Fellowship Church crashed into lake in Tennessee, with all passengers presumed dead on Saturday.

The Cessna C501 left from Smyrna Rutherford County Airport before it slammed into the water in Percy Priest Lake in Smyrna, Tennessee around at 10:53am shortly after take-off, officials said in a news release. The plane was bound for Palm Beach International Airport and it was not immediately clear who was piloting it.

Rutherford County officials had indicated earlier in the day that at least one person had died in the accident, though did not reveal who that passenger was.

Her website describes her as the 'pioneer of faith-based weight loss.'
In a 40 year old airplane.

Private aviation is at least as safe as airliners... if you're a billionaire and hire the right people.

If you try to go cheap, it's gets risky fast, but apparently the jet mystique clouds people's judgement.

As with the Mitsubishi it wasn’t the plane (mostly) it was the people buying them.
Almost jet speeds for piston prices.
Older airframes were on the market for $250-$300k.
You couldn’t buy a Baron for that kind of money.
Hey presto they start turning into lawn darts.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration website, no one on that flight was qualified to fly the plane. Joe Lara, 58, had a pilot's license, but had not updated his medical certification since 2017. The medical certification is required every two years.

Brandon Hannah, another church leader with a pilot license, was on the flight, but he didn't have a certification for the Cessna 500 series, according to the FAA database.

If the FAA was correct stupid stuff like this is going to make insurance so expensive it's going to put a major damper on owner flown turbine equipment.

Joe Lara had the type rating. His medical was less than a year overdue, definite party foul but not necessarily a contributing factor, certainly not a smoking gun. Probably hints of a lax attitude, although who knows maybe he just forget (the airline always reminds me).

A type rating from March last year?
How much did he fly in the last 12 months?
180 days? 90 days?
Isn’t a single pilot rating designated as /s on the FAA website?

Did it count as single pilot with the other guy on board? Commercial ops would require some training for the SIC. Not sure about PPL ops. Also we don't know that the other pilot didn't have the basic SIC training, that would not show up on his cert so maybe he did.

Odd that there were no distress radio calls.

Party foul? Jesus take the yoke more like it.

Anyone know what the tone was that was going off in the background when they read back the heading assignment?
