That's horrible!

The guy goes to space and then 2 weeks later gets killed in a Skyhawk?! :-(

That's what I was thinking. Get the dangerous thing done with no problem then get killed on a routine GA flight.

Perhaps that's the problem in general: pilots who are complacent enough to see any flight as "routine."

The difference between one killed in the space shuttle, and one killed in a J-3 cub? We like to laugh and say that the J-3 just kills one more slowly, but in the end, both are equally dead.

What’s routine about flying a single engine single system, single pilot(?) single everything with no backup systems vs a completely automated pilotless billion dollar rocket.
And personally I think it’s more ironic then sad.

If it turns out to be continued VFR into IMC or CFIT or stall/spin or gross pilot error is it still sad?
This immediate sad or God bless or Even worse ‘Prayers sent’ is so virtue signaling social media-ish.
Yes, I’m a nice guy to fly with before we get that passive aggressive comment.

I think ironic is the correct word for this. The rocket is a lot more dramatic but probably just as safe as single engine flying.

I flew for 3 large companies after the military. With each of those we had one or two professional pilots per year kill themselves with a light twin or single piston aircraft.

Still that Cessna 172 flight was statistically safer than driving. I just hope the cause was something other than a stupid pilot trick.

No passive aggressiveness here: you sound like a cancer in the cockpit. Neither pilot in this crash was new to flying. The right seat was occupied by a CFI/owner/operator of a local flight school who had decades of experience. I didn't know them personally but know several people who did, and they're all mourning the loss of two good people. The aviation community is small and tight nit. People express their sadness because they, unlike you, feel for the deceased's families and friends. RIP.

I held off on the expletives I initially wanted to use. I'll just suggest that when you don't have something nice to say about pilots who lost their lives, then don't say anything.

The flight track shows a normal flight to a practice area where it appears they may have practiced a stall. There was no recovery. The aircraft had just completed a annual inspection. I suspect the FAA will be very interested in that inspection.
I have no idea if it is related to this accident however i have noted in both light aircraft maintenance and in the 121 world there appears to be zero tool control. I have found a lot of tools on preflight inspections.

Depending on which model Cessna they may have been way out of the Utility envelope to spin. If my memory serves me correctly with two adults in a C172SP you could only carry 10 gallons of fuel to be in Utility.
Also SP’s are more aggressive then older models. Twice I’ve been upside down as a result of a botched stall in an SP.
New airplanes too.
