pro tip on IOS. From the paid site, on your address bar at the bottom, tap the little Aa, then select “reader view.”

I can't think of anything on the fed side that would constitute an actual crime.

State/local there could be some sort of reckless endangerment charges, but that would likely require the presence of people on the ground near the crash site.

The fact that he had no control over where the plane crashed could be construed as reckless endangerment. They could argue it was pure luck the plane floated to a remote area.

When when he cut the power, there was no way the plane could have reached a non-remote area. Could there have been some hiker out there? Sure, but odds of the plane hitting a hypothetical hiker are so astronomically low that I doubt you could sell a jury. If nothing else, he picked a good location for his stunt.

More likely IMO that you could argue fire hazard, but that's akin to having an open campfire in a restricted area... a ticket from the park ranger, not jail. You can go to jail if you actually start a big wildfire, but obviously that didn't happen.

Oh come now, that standby favorite of the feds:
wire fraud

edit

What's the fraud part? That actually requires theft of something valuable. If the guy was stoopid enough to file an insurance claim then he's he's toast on several levels. Or if he did a gofundme to replace the plane, etc.

But if all he did was post a video on youtube, that's entertainment, not fraud. Most of Hollywood's output is fictional in nature, they make billions, and it's still not fraud.

Conspiracy to commit a non-crime is also not a crime. I'm conspiring with my wife right now to move our RV to a new lot... pretty sure the feds won't be busting down my door.

None of his stupidity rose to the level of actual crime until he started trying to hide info from the feds: Obstruction.

Glad to see he gets what he had coming, one way or another.
