UPS MD11 Cargo Fire

Incident: UPS MD11 at Louisville on Jan 27th 2023, cargo fire indication and smoke in cockpit (avherald.com)

The crew acted quickly, followed procedure, and got down and stopped, the best possible outcome.

Why would the crew choose the short runway, between 17L and 17R? It's a busy place during the rush, and tying up a runway might hamper operations, but when one fire, personally, I want the the most immediate runway, and given options among the most immediate, then the longest. They did ultimately choose 17R, but only after a cargo fire indication and requesting 17L.. They requested the right only after smoke in the cockpit.

Regardless, getting on the ground is the first priority...but best to do that with the most options and ideally, the longest runway.

Yeah better to have the most flexible option as your default. I always have the long runway in the secondary for a quick return. That's normally the inboard/departure runway, not the usual arrival rwy.
