Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 breaks up on landing at Riyadh
Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 breaks up on landing at Riyadh
By David Kaminski-Morrow
Crew members of a Lufthansa Cargo Boeing MD-11 freighter have been hospitalised after the aircraft broke up on landing at Riyadh's King Khaled International Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Lufthansa Cargo says the aircraft suffered a "hard landing" and "broke into two pieces" but adds that the pilots are safe, and being transported to hospital.
Sources familiar with the situation state that the aircraft involved is a 17-year old airframe, registered D-ALCQ, powered by General Electric CF6 engines and owned by the carrier.
Images from the scene, carried in the Saudi media, show the burning aircraft being attended by firefighters.
Circumstances of the heavy landing remain unclear.
King Khaled International Airport is the kingdom's capital hub. It has two parallel runways although a NOTAM message shows that one of these, runway 15L/33R, is currently closed for maintenance.

JACDEC says there may have been a hard landing involved:
On approach to runway 33L (lengh: 4205 meters) at Riyadh International Airport, the crew declared an emergency because of an onboard fire inidication. Some ground wittnesses observed the MD-11 was trailing smoke while on final approach. After coming to a standstill the fire intensified causing its fuselage to fail just aft of the wings. Both crewmembers were able to escape with injuries. The aircraft is a complete loss. According to other reports the damage may have resulted from a hard landing. Local weather conditions at the time were fine with clear skies moderate winds from the north and unlimited visibility.
NOTE: This accident represents the 8th hull loss of an MD-11 and the 2nd hull loss for a Lufthansa Cargo aircraft.

Just glad everyone got out!

Nobody cares!!!
Now, relax, that is called sarcasm...Nobody cares because it was a freighter. They only paid lip service to the FDX MD11 in NRT because they had a nice, juicy, video for that. But in about 2 seconds the coverage was over.
Same thing with the FDX in EWR (??), and UPS DC8 in EWR...and the list goes on.
True that the airplanes we fly don't have hundreds of passengers, but why are the lives of several professionals only important when they are carrying passengers?

If the news reports are correct, I am impressed that the way you figured out to stop inflight fires on cargo aircraft was just to ground one type. What an easy fix, they probably could have prevented a lot of accidents over the years if we'd only known!
