Hello guys.

So I have heard a lot about this Safety Management System that ICAO is trying to get everybody to comply with.

Apparently the FAA is dragging their feet.

Does anybody here know details for Part 91 and 135 operators as far as:

What is the date when compliance is required?

What will be required to be carried onboard the aircraft to prove compliance?

My management company is basically clueless and I want to make sure next time I fly overseas I am not going to get busted for not being in compliance.

Compliance date is November 19, 2010. There aren't any officially defined methods to prove compliance but I have listed the ICAO SMS requirements below.

Many operators have opted to obtain IS-BAO certification (Approx $10,000 for Stage One audit, good for 24 months) as a means of certifying they operate in accordance with industry best practices.

Section 3 - Large and Turbojet Aeroplanes

3.3.2 Safety management system
3.3.2.1 An operator shall establish and maintain a safety management system that is appropriate to the
size and complexity of the operation.
3.3.2.2

Recommendation.— The safety management system should as minimum include:
a) a process to identify actual and potential safety hazards and assess the associated risks;
b) a process to develop and implement remedial action necessary to maintain an acceptable level of
safety; and
c) provision for continuous monitoring and regular assessment of the appropriateness and
effectiveness of safety management activities.
Note.— Guidance on safety management systems is contained in the Safety Management Manual
(SMM) (Doc 9859) and industry codes of practice.

Call your POI. He/she should know of a FAAST team member that could give an SMS Initial Briefing to your company. The SMS "cadre" with the FAA is growing. Although there is no regulatory requirement, there will be in the near future. AFS-900 has a cadre of ASI's that are specialists in the SMS realm. If yo could get hooked up with one of their folks, it would really be beneficial. Any additional help on this, feel free to PM me.

Wow... thanks guys. I actually finally got in touch with somebody at my management company that claims we are getting an audit from something called IS-BAO and that will suffice for my needs.
