How the heck did the gear catch on fire? Even if they were overweight, the runway is plenty long and the weather is cool. I wonder what was going on there?

Delta Flight Makes Emergency Landing, 2 Hurt - News Story - KRDO Colorado Springs
"Maintenance crews determined that the plane had “hot brakes.” The term “hot brakes” refers to something that sometimes happens during fast landings. The heat from the brakes affects the air temperature and pressure in the plane’s tires. That poses the dangerous possibility of the tires exploding. A Delta spokesperson told NEWSCHANNEL 13 that the plane was diverted because the pilot noticed that an indicator warning light had lit up. It indicated that there might be engine trouble." I like it when the news just reports what they actually know (or at least what they were told) and doesn't try to pretend like they know more than they do. |

Here's a video of the evac taken from a passenger's phone.
Slide Down The Escape Chute Of A Delta Jet I still don't understand why they chose to evac because of a hot brake or how they got a hot brake to begin with? There's gotta be more to the story. The firefighters don't even seem to be too concerned with the gear since they're nowhere near it on the passenger's video. I wonder if the FA's initiated the evac? Odd stuff... |
I found out recently that there was more to the story. The crew elected to evacuate based off information from the ARFF chief. He said that their right main gear was on fire and recommended an evacuation. 757-300 has no brake temp indicators on the status page, and only the brake overheat light on the forward panel. They had no light, but didn't want to take the chance so they evacuated. Looks like the crew made a good call, and the ARFF was full of it as there was no brake overheat and no fire as shown on the video.

Ah come on, I used to watch Delta's L1011's pull into the gate with the brakes on fire all the time. lol
Seriously though, what matters. Something went wrong the plane made it back on the ground and everyone is off the plane. Success in my book, good job |

Sounds like some are faulting the ARFF for a "safe, conservative" approach too.
The safe and conservative approach can be taken by everyone down the line and someone will question it at some point. USMCFLYR |
