Omega tanker crash at Point Mugu
Just watching the TV news out here in LA and they are showing the fire from a tanker crash at Point Mugu. Three crewmembers apparently walked away, so that's good news. Looks to me from the news chopper pix that it was an aborted takeoff that went bad. That is pure speculation, however.

POINT MUGU, VENTURA COUNTY (KABC) -- The Ventura County Fire Dept. reports a military Boeing 707 plane with three people on board went down at the Pt. Mugu naval air base. The three onboard escaped with minor injuries. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen rising from the aircraft located near the beach. The plane is reportedly a Boeing 707 plane, which is considered an older model. The plane reportedly crashed on takeoff. NAVAIR Point Mugu, the naval air base, issued a flight-restricted-area designation, requiring any aircraft to maintain a distance of at least 5 miles. Approximately 150,000 pounds of jet fuel was reportedly onboard when the plane crashed. Skid marks are visible veering off the main runway at the base. It appeared the crash occurred at the end of the landing strip. Several firefighting agencies were summoned to extinguish the flames burning the plane. There is a possibility of a hazardous-material situation. The smoke and fuel can be toxic. People in the area are being warned to stay indoors and away from the smoke. I believe that they have had a really good safety record with no Class A mishaps up until this time. At least I have never heard of them having any. I've flown out of Pt Mugu quite a bit before. That mishap will garner a lot of environmental attention from some in CA. USMCFLYR |
Worst bird problem I've ever seen at an airport. The airfield is surrounded by wetlands. We complain all the time...hope that wasn't causal to the accident.
