Default 787 grounding question

I should probably know the answer already, but instead of grounding the entire fleet, was there ever any consideration to just fly them "APU INOP" and take out the batteries. We fly all the other airplanes that way starting them at the gate, etc. Or were there problems with all the batteries?

For sure. APU is required for ETOPS. So we only use it domestically for now.....

Talked to a buddy on it and he says you hafta start the engines off of APU cause it's very picky about quality of ground power

Is "Hafta" the official terminology?

I've done plenty of ETOPS without an APU. It's not required on the 757/767, but it does reduce your ETOPS stage length. I think last time I went from 180 to 120 minutes.

Perhaps the 787 is different.?

Huh... That's interesting. It's been a couple of years since they kicked me off the 767, but I was pretty sure that our (LUAL) ops specs required the APU for ETOPS. Anyone currently on the fleet at LUAL comment?

I did many NAT crossing without APU. LCAL.

The 737 requires it for ETOPS.

Simply put, if the apu is not working, we are not going. LUAL. There was a letter regarding deep south and equipment that needed to be operable.

This is gonna be one heck of a culture clash.
