Syrian Rebels Shoot At 747

Wonder how many innocent people died after being hit with stray bullets.
These guys seem to have no qualms about firing into the air, on any occasion.

I used to fly into KBHM regularly. The FBO had a collection of slugs, found on the ramp, from New Year's and other festivals worthy of firing straight up into the air.
One of the slugs was a .44.
An infant was killed in PHX, many years ago, after the same type of celebration. Bullet came through the window. (No, not a drive-by....a vertical trajectory).
There are many cities in America where people believe that vertical bullets just 'evaporate,' because 'I never saw it again.'

On July 6th a few years back I found a fired .40 FMJ bullet in perfect condition on the back patio of a place I was renting, complete with rifling marks but otherwise not deformed. Still can't figure out how it ended up so well preserved... luckily I don't live in that town anymore

A small arms bullet fired straight up into the air is unlikely to harm anyone, it won't have enough energy. This requires a plumb and level to set up properly. Have not seen many yo-yos use this method though.
However, tilt that muzzle a few degrees off center and a bullet will carry a lot of energy a long way. Max range is at about a 45 degree angle.
Firing a weapon into the air is a very bad idea, and not an indicator of anything except wanton disregard for life and property.

Actually, a study HAS been done on this. It found that anything bigger than a .25 auto had the capability in terms of mass and speed to penetrate a skull. .22s and .25s weren't very capable. I think they concluded just about everything else would, as it's a combination of either small cross section (5.56) allowing it to accelerate and weight, as far as energy imparted when it strikes a human. Although you can get max range at 45°, I doubt it's carrying any more energy at the point of impact than the one fired straight up.
