True, but not usually on both sides.

Stay on the side opposite the lines, then slip over at the last moment.

Sounds blasphemous, doesn't it? Yet, the best aviation safetey forum I ever attended dispelled all kinds of myths we were taught in flight training. Go for the road. ... and with most fixed gear, if forced to land, don't be reluctant to land on a big wide shallow river! You can hydroplane until you are pretty slow.
