I would think, that after a mid-air collision over the water, you either have a damaged airplane that needs to be landed immediately or you have a safe flyable airplane that can help spot and follow the wreckage of the other plane and direct rescuers to it.

Maybe not common, but certainly possible with the right geometry...ie high wing climbing into low wing. |

That's not necessarily a good plan... You might want to make sure the airplane isn't uncontrollable as soon as you put out flaps/gear, etc.
