I would think, that after a mid-air collision over the water, you either have a damaged airplane that needs to be landed immediately or you have a safe flyable airplane that can help spot and follow the wreckage of the other plane and direct rescuers to it.

But I wasn't there...

That's not necessarily a good plan... You might want to make sure the airplane isn't uncontrollable as soon as you put out flaps/gear, etc.

IIRC the pilots of the legacy which collided with the 73 in Brazil didn't know for sure they had hit something.

Maybe not common, but certainly possible with the right geometry...ie high wing climbing into low wing.

+1 to this. If the pilot had survived the crash it would be a shame for him to pass away from rescue vehicles not being able to find them.

Right. But he still went much further than needed and as previously mentioned didn't bother trying to assist in spotting.
