Food/treats from passengers
I'm occasionally offered some kind of home made treat like cookies or candy from a Flt attendant. Fairly offen these treats were given to them by a passenger or jumpseater or non-rev. I never accept them unless I know and trust the person who gave them. It just seems like good policy.
I was surprised to find that there is no language in our FOM addressing this issue. Can you imagine the fallout if both pilots ate an "edible?" For those of you who don't live in a state where marijuana is legal, an edible is a food item that is laced with THC. Great fun for Friday night at the frat house. Not so great if your about to fly a bunch of passengers. Do any of you have specific language in your FOM about this issue? |
Does common sense have to be mandated? Would you eat something given to you by a total stranger in the airport?

Really? Have you ever read your FOM? If common sense played a part in writing an FOM. They'd be a lot shorter.

I think most crew know better than to offer homemade goodies to flight crew, unless they know them well.
Some of our regular commuters will bring commercially packed candy, like M&M's. I'm OK with one of us eating that...if the FO wants it, it's all his. If he doesn't want any then I might eat it. But unfortunately in the world we live in you just have to be careful. |
Be especially careful if an old crone in a pointy hat tries to give you an apple.
|
I'm not saying that we are not smart enough to refuse the offers. I'm saying the flight attendants shouldn't accept them and offer them to us. I don't know what they do with the food after we say no. I'm guessing they share among themselves.

Sheesh. Stranger Danger everybody. What the hell is wrong with you? Policies for when or what to eat? I'm at a loss for words with how pathetic people are in the US these days.

1) If we both get sick, even due to accidental food poisoning, it could degrade safety. I flew with a guy who got a bad turkey sandwich...hurled all over the place and was essentially incapacitated, we had a long break so it didn't happen in flight but it could have. If we had both had that sandwich and then departed the FAs looking for a PPL in the cabin... 2) Unfortunately the reality is that airliners are a target. Not prudent to take food from strangers...or if you do save it until you're done for the day. |

Sheesh, a little harsh dude. I'm asking about your airlines policy. I don't think calling me pathetic is resonable.

You asked a valid question, Mike, but of course in true APC (immature) fashion, you received mostly snark in return. I KNOW you have common sense about the issue, but were asking about FOM. Apparently, the kids have reading comprehension problems or never want to miss a chance to puff their skinny, hairless chests out and show what badasses they are (or THINK they are). I'm thinking Napoleonic complexes. :)
|
I think it's completely reasonable considering you're expecting a policy to exist.

Sigh, maybe it's time for another break from APC.

Occasionally I was offered food from flight attendants and passengers. I graciously thanked them and when the door was closed, I threw the food away. Simple.
|
Let me amend my remarks. There was a flight attendant that I flew with for many years that went out of the way to bring in fabulous homemade meals that were delicious!
|
All of the goodies I've gotten have been Kit Kats, M&Ms, stuff like that, which I will always eat. If I ever got baked goods I'd eat them but only if I knew the person who made them. We have a tiny crew base so the chances of that are good :)
Side note, bringing treats for pilots when jump seating is a sure way to get all the pilots to love you! I go out of my way to buy cookies once a trip for our flight attendants and return the favor. It's amazing what a 99 cent cookie will do for morale |
The only time I take food for the crew is if I am flying late Christmas Day. Then I take an Oreo cookies and cream fudge my wife makes every year. But I make sure I know the crew and am reasonably sure I don't have to eat all of it.
I won't eat food offered to me by passengers. As several others said earlier in this thread, we are a target. Eating food from someone I don't know just doesn't make sense. To answer the earlier question, there's nothing I've seen in my current FOM or in any other FOM I've used during my career. |

I frequently have food and drink "given" to me by pax. Admittedly, it's a couple of thousand Lollards worth of catering that was untouched and, even, unopened. Wine? Well, it has to be opened, I guess. But, nothing makes a long flight end better than sips of Dom P champers with the crew!

I eat everything.

Seems I clearly recall UAL's FOM specifically forbidding flight crew members from ingesting food from passengers back around late sixties/early seventies.
(Then again, I recall munching on some cookies presented to the cockpit crew by "Dear Abby" immediately prior to that time, too.) LOL |
I once accepted and ate two cookies from a girl scout who was traveling with her parents and I never got sick. The DTW Fuddruckers chicken sandwich on the other hand...
|
When I jumpseat offline, I always grab a bag of Reese's from the airport newsstand for the F/As. Its a gesture that is generally well received.
As a pilot, should you indulge? I'll leave that up to your personal judgment. But, as Mike said, there's so much B.S. in the average airline FOM it waters the eyes. |
As of today, hugs, kisses, or handshakes from passengers are a bad idea too.
