Wow - looking out at that wing I might have chosen to exit the aircraft. Even if controllable at the time might be unpredictable at low speeds. Of course, would have to take in account where the plane would come down.

Great outcome to a near-tragedy.

Which is why you would do a controllability check at altitude. Can you fly? Can the aircraft fly? If either answer is no, then you get out. Jumping is a high risk evolution, if the airplane is controllable even at high speed I'd stay with it.

Jumping in this scenario is probably more high risk for those on the ground than the airman, depending on terrain etc... I'd worry a "controllability check" is limited when a chunk of the wing is gone (as the airspeed is reduced a lot of things could go wrong, parts held on by airstream may now fly off, etc.) I suppose could slow to approach speed at altitude and do a full check, then perhaps do a higher than normal speed landing. Obviously staying with the plane, in this case, was the right decision!
