My other sister is an RD, she'll tell you both exercise and diet are important for health and maintenance of weight. Anybody who tells you that you can skip the exercise is trying to sell you diet shakes or something.
There is a balance between diet and exercise, and there's some trade space between the two. I've consumed up to 8,000 calories/day while participating in a fitness program courtesy of the military, not an ounce of body fat to be found back then. Of course that involved at least ten hours/day of strenuous exertion...
