Quote: Thanks for the info! I'm considering staying in ny for seniority at least for now. I'll be about 60% there vs 90% in SLC. Hoping I can group my trips together so I only have to commute two or three times per month.

Don't know what airplane you're on in NY, but pattern bidding on the ER is a great way to cut down on commutes.

Award 12-14 day blocks with (min) 1 day off between blocks.

Then start listing your wish trips or types of trips you want. Somewhere in there, you will need a 30hr free of duty interval (FAR 117) so just add a bunch of wish trips in your list that have more than a 30hr layover.

Did that for years with probably 18 commutes each year from SLC. A nice crashpad is mandatory for this technique.

Sorry to raise this thread up from the grave- but I am considering a move to PHX. I have heard the PHX-LAX commute is pretty rough with all the competition.

Anyone currently commuting PHX-SLC?

How difficult is it? Google flights shows about 15 nonstops a day on DL, AA, WN, F9

Thanks!
I know I’m stating the obvious and there’s obviously reasons you’re looking at PHX but if you’re going to move, I’d highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend trying to move to a base. This full-time job quickly turns into a part time job just by not having to commute. My 18 day off schedule at my old carrier quickly turned into 14 days off/month with how much time I lost planning and being cautious. Especially when on probation.

Also, there might be plenty of flights/day between PHX and NYC but if you’re going to EWR or LGA and it’s a JFK trip… factor in more expenses with transportation. If you are on the ER you’ll be on reserve for a while. How does commuting the day before a SC period you don’t get used for, just to commute back and have another one for 2 days later, where you have to leave again the next day sound to you?

If PHX is a must, I’d do SLC all day long on the bus until you can swap to LAX 73 or ER after your first year if that commute is even easier.

I live in base, but have heard many horror stories of DL/AA/UA FAs and pilots carpooling between PHX/LA due to no mainlines on it. I knew many that commute PHX to SEA and have switched to SLC after the commutes got more frequent/easier.

Quote: Why not ask or attempt PHX to LAX? Lax is rapidly becoming a junior base for us.
I’ve been LAX based for about 2.5 years and I cannot tell you how many guys I fly with who do this commute and hate it. No mainline DL flights. Lot of commuters. Some guys even buy Southwest tickets. I’d do SLC as it’s not really that much more senior. (Hell some fleets are more senior in LAX like 320A). Not having mainline to book jumps on will make your commute a lot worse. Just my 2c if I were to pick.

SLC is also a rapidly growing base with the expansion of the terminal A complete. You’ll be good in either airport for the future (unless you want widebody then you’ll have to go to LAX)

Didn't Compass close shop in 2020?

I commute from PHX to SEA. I never worry about making it to work or home.

Ahhh, I missed the date on the post I asked about. I fly PHX-SEA quite a bit and don't see any problems with commuters making it to SEA.
