HNL is the pilot base for Hawaiian. Anytime you are there you are on your own. The first year pay is unarguably atrocious. Management is apparently not motivated to change this and probably won't until no resumes come in.

I guess the ideal new hire is a local, so they would just stay at home.

This is the only domicile for Hawaiian so the way people make it work during training is the same way you make it work after training, either make the move or find a Crashpad/room to rent if you’re going to commute.
