It's not decades away. At last summer's Paris Air Show both Boeing and Airbus indicated they will be ready to configure current aircraft operating under CAT and FAR Part 121 single pilot operations in four years, beginning in 2024.

Considering I’m flying a jet that was designed before I was born (and I’m over 40) the industry's snail pace of adoption and change of new technology gives me comfort. The costs, regulations, tech, public trust, etc. are all in our favor. The technology might exist soon but the reality of replacing us is far from a done deal.

personally I think they are going to start with long haul cruise having 1 pilot. 2 on board for to/ldg and only 1 during cruise to monitor with the other 1 sleeping. this seems like the only thing technology is ready for. I dont think it is good risk management to only have 1 pilot on board and autonomous is a long way out but this is coming IMO.

We already have voice activated take off...requires a new hire though.
