If you like being outside and have a little time, take a walk down the promenade and go check out Citi Field and Flushings Meadow Corona Park, site of the 1964 World's Fair and U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

Not a layover but my crew always loves the artichoke pizza in the food court or the trough of a salad bar.
