Quote: How could the vehicles not see the jet coming down the runway at them? And the pilots should have been able to see the vehicles.
Quote: Being able to see something headed your way, or something in the way, does not equate to being able to get out of the way, or to avoid either one.
Looked to me like the truck was on a parallel taxiway and then turned abruptly into the runway. If that was the case there wasn't jack the pilots could do, I'd rather hit a truck and stop straight ahead than go off-roading near V1.

Quote: Makes you think. You’re below V1, you see something you’ll hit whether you reject or continue. How fast would you need to be going to think, “emergency thrust, flaps 15” maybe could pull it off the ground and try to clear the vehicles?
Emergency thrust (TOGA) would have made little difference at that point. And what if you get it into ground effect and then settle as you try to climb out?

Naw, the way it looks, I agree with TiredSoul.

Reminds me of railroad locomotives. Someone who crosses right in front. All you can do is run right over them. Then stop to pick up the bodies.

And kill everyone onboard? Hope no one ever has to make such a decision.
From the videos, they likely either did not see them at all, or had a second or two tops.

What if you guess wrong, now you are taking a severely damaged bird flying with a wing on fire that you cannot extinguish.

T/O decision
Someone has made a decision to take off rather than stop or swerve. KLM at Tenerife. That worked out well.

What is your point?

KLM was screwed either way. With the low vis, they had very little advance (visual) warning. PANAM did what they could.

Moreover, the suggestion that someone has made a decision in this mishap to takeoff, a conscious act made when the option to not take off, or to "swerve" existed, is not in evidence. This is pure speculation. One really supposes that the crew saw a fire truck sitting on the runway with lights in motion, elected to initiate the takeoff, and then continued it until impact?

the fire vehicle entered the runway without notice or authorization, under speed, running lights, enroute and responding to another aircraft on the other side of the runway. The incursion occurred at the intersection of Bravo and Rwy16, approximately 4,000' into the takeoff roll. The amount of time that existed between recognition of the firetruck's incursion, and the impact, is unclear, as is the action taken by the crew in response. What is clear is that impact occurred, and a subsequent fire happened.

Wild speculation on the decision making or actions of the crew is unwarranted, and unprofessional. An investigation will play out, and information will become available, when appropriate, associated with that investigation and any results or conclusions thereof.

According to Juan Browne's latest video the pilots have been arrested:

Here's a clip from a document in the video:

"The flight crew of LATAM 2213 were also placed under arrest and held in custody in Lima up until last night." "IFALPA considers this situation unacceptable."
