According to the article below, we are giving up our large maintenance hangar at LAX. I don’t know if that is old news or not. It’s dated March 24, 2023. I wonder if giving up the MX hangar is a sign of a soon to be announced LAX base closure or if it was barely used and is just a cost cutting step.

Seems like LAX has been trying to get rid of cargo for some time. Unfortunate for those employees involved. Second article claims this is not a DRIVE cost-cutting measure.

Wow. Huge.

I’ve had numerous maintenance jumpseaters from LAX going on house hunting trips to MEM and IND. They couldn’t wait to leave CA. I bet for many this is a blessing. Unfortunately others are losing their jobs.

Or, maybe it is just what was posted in the article. The lease for the hanger expires in June 2024. The people that work there were told that the airport wasn't interested in a long term lease. So, FedEx decided against a short term lease and is moving the maintenance to IND as a cost savings measure. The article quoted FedEx as saying that this only affects the maintenance hangar. Maybe they will be closing LAX as a pilot base, maybe not. Let's not get distracted. Let's get the contract we deserve. Time for FedEx to pay up. See you April 5th.

LAX pilot base will eventually close because the MD-11 is going away. But that pilot base is not going to close because the LAX heavy maintenance facility closes. The majority of LAX MD-11 bid package trips don’t even touch LAX.

As long as the MD11 operates in Asia, LAX will be a domicile. They need reserves within a day of operating in theater.

Nah....they haven't really used that in years. Short fuse trip to get someone in position? Very rare - company has generally figured out how to do revisions in the field efficiently. THAT won't keep LAX open. That being said I bet MD11 intl flying will go away - just easier on parts and everything else.

the days of the MD-11 operating in asia are rapidly coming to an end, when that happens, or when it gets close to happening, the base will close. Like tuck said, keeping a whole supply chain of parts for it in Asia is expensive and quickly beginning to not make sense.

But the hangar closing in LAX is completely unrelated to the base.

Triple operates in Asia and it doesn’t have an LAX base…yet
