Hi all,
I am currently a dash8 captain in Canada and have been granted my greencard through marriage. My situation is a little restricted at this time, so I figured it would be best to ask in an American aviation forum what my best options may be. I have roughly 2300tt, atpl, 1500 multi, 1000 airline(705) time. Will be converting to ATP as soon as I can.
My wife lives in northern Montana and we will not be able to move for a few years yet due to her current situation. So far it seems like my career options would be as followed:
1. Consult a tax specialist and continue working for my airline in Canada while living in the USA, until something opens up in our city. Seems to be a few corporate jets, and a 208 cargo position that periodically open up, but nothing at this time. I don't feel great about going backwards in my career, but the money converts to more than I'm making now anyway.
2. Rotational/roamer position. I saw a position at Empire Airlines offering a 14/7 rotation for the ATR. I've enjoyed working rotational in the past, but would much prefer a 7/7 or 14/14 rotation for work/life. I also noticed a large corporate charter company offering rotations, can't remember which company, but I believe the rotation was 5/5.
3. Try to get on with a regional in SLC or DEN. This appears to be the best career move, but I would have to commute. With being a new seniority I assume I would be on reserve for a year or so, and basically living in either of those cities for most of the month. Kind of defeats the purpose, as we did this so we could live together.
I understand the US aviation space is much different than Canada's, and I appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!
