I Always Thought the MD-11 Had Large Windows . . .

. . . but I never knew they were this big!

What a pic! Definitely an unusual perspective.

It is a wonderful view from the inside. I've had the fortune to ride up front a number of times and it truly is a window to the world.

Matter of fact, saw the Northern Lights for the first time looking out that window. Well, not that one in particular. It was one of Lufthansa Cargo's birds, on it's way home for the first time.

Note the picture to the left.

I didn't know that the MD-11 only requried only two pilots. I was really under the impression that the cockpit had an FE/SO panel. I was told otherwise by my discovery flight instructor who happens to be a fomer Delta captain.

Boy did I look silly, momentarily that is, insisting that the flight deck seated 3 people.

Two schools of thought.

Check out airliners.net, do a search on MD-11 cockpits. There's one picture there taken by Sam Chui of a Varig which shows the Left, Right, and Aft Observers seat (which rotates and elevates.

Some of the MD-11 customers had a fourth seat installed, just to the left/aft of the Captain's chair.

There was also a fold-down jumpseat, just as you enter the cockpit, on the left.

So, two driving, up to three along for the ride.

The MD-10 is a two man bird... a bunch of DC-10s at FedEx have been converted to a two man crew, kinda cool looking at an FE station with no switches and stuff.

The C-17 has the same front end as the -10/-11. Huge flight decks go with those windows!
