Gotta layover in the Sheraton Buenos Aires later in the month and wondering what one can do on a short (15 hrs) layover with mainly the morning usable.
I'm told that leather is cheap, are there any recommended areas to shop, and if so, suggestions of shops, etc.

It's been several years since I was there so I can't remember names of stores, but I do recall the following activities gave me a warm, satisfied feeling: eat at any steakhouse which at the time served up steaks bigger than the dinner plate itself and only for $10 per person; wash it all down with a bottle of good Malbec; shop for Italian goods; browse the leather shops along 9 de Julio Blvd (I bought my favorite leather backpack there) and look for shoes and other products made of carpincho/capybara leather; tango show; visit a real gaucho ranch; visit San Telmo neighborhood.

Beware of the open market area by Recoleta. My husband was pickpocketed there and we had to go to the US Embassy. That is something I don't wish on anyone.

Thanks for the quick reply! I seem to get my fill of meat in Campinas, think I got a touch of food poisoning the other day, better now. Will check out the shopping and see what I can in the limited time I'll have there.

BA is a great town. Nueva de Julio, Florida, and Corrientes are the main streets in the shopping districts. The recoleta is a neat cemetary - they bury the people above gound in crypts, like in New Orleans. The Recoleta is nice though, the crypts are beautiful. I saw Eva Peron's crypt - she is actually buried in the "Duarte" crypt (Duarte was her maiden name). Steak is great, leather goods are great, and they have some really great sweaters you can buy - good wool goods.
