when flying IFR do you mostly fly by atc vectoring or by navigation of airways vor's.

Enroute is mostly airways, with occasional vectors for traffic, Wx, or restricted airspace. Terminal operations usually involve vectors but there are some departures and arrivals which are flown without vectors.

You may get a lot of vectors in Class B, but otherwise it's mostly airways or direct to fixes/navaids.

Very depending on where you're operating.

As well as what altitudes. If you're in the NE, then there's a good chance you'll be vectored a lot. If you're in the middle of the desert, not so much.

And Heaven help you if you're in Southern Cal (even when it isn't on fire...).

Enroute its usually airways and navaids. Approach usually is vectors unless where there is no radar coverage. You can always ask for a full approach though in which its your own navigation, not vectors
