Delta 9838 on 10/29

Anyone know what happened on Delta flight 9838 from DEN to BOS today? I think this may have been the flight chartered by the Boston Red Sox because FlightAware shows this leg canceled, but then shows the same flight number leaving a few hours earlier than the canceled flight, and there was footage of the BoSox using Delta for their flight home. What happened to all the passengers on 9838? Were they told that the flight was canceled due to the Red Sox sweep? Did the flight turn in to a charter?

If the passengers were the Sox going to Denver to play game 5...why would they care what happened to the flight?

9xxx series flights are charters

To futher clarify....

If you hear a 96xx flight number, it is a stub- that flight to the gate and the passengers is it's original number (e.g. 831 or something). For ATC purposes due to the inbound portion of that flight being delayed, they will use the 96xx number on freq.

A 98xx flight number is a chartered flight- typically carrying sports teams.

A 99xx flight number is a repo flight. You'll typically see a charter flight going into an airport with the 9800 number and repoing back out with a 9900 number b/c it is now an empty repo aircraft.

Nerd time, off.
