Default FCC License

Hey Pilots:

I was wondering if someone could help me with a little something. I am hoping to begin applying to the regionals in the very near future, and I am currently working to check each little task off of the requirements list. One task I am struggling with is the FCC License. I have perused this very disorienting government website in search of this license. Some airlines refer to it as the FCC RadioTelephone Operator Permit, or FCC License, or FCC Radio License, etc. The bottom line is, I am not sure which form or application is required to be sent in. If anyone who has conquered this experience can help to guide me, I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Jason Powell

Go here:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/commoperators/rp.html

You need a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.
No test required for this one since you have your pilot certificate. Fill out and send in forms 605 and 159 with the fee and in a few weeks it will come in the mail to you.

There's actually a way to do it all online too, without using a paper application. First, you need to register with the FCC and get an FCC Registration Number (FRN), that can be done here:
https://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do

Then, u can log into the Universal Licensing System using your FRN here:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/

Once you do that, simply click on the "apply for a new license" link and follow the directions. The license code you are applying for is RR - Restricted Operator. You pay the fee online using a credit card and you'll get it in the mail within a few weeks.

Even saves you some $ since you don't have to buy a stamp now! Thanks for pointing out the online option.

I got my original in 1989. I did a search by name and it showed nothing for me so I am glad I checked. Thanks for the info Alex; good stuff!

Respectfully,

I too could not find a record of mine from 1988, so after misplacing my old one (left it in a copier), I just went ahead and got a new one

No one mentioned it, but the fee for the FCC RR permit is 55$. The permit should arrive in about a business week if you use the online app and payment. If it has been a lot longer than that, I suggest you call the FCC at 800.225.5322 and select prompt #2 to talk to a FCC rep, then have them make sure your app and payment went through correctly.

In my case, the app (form 605) went through fine, but the payment did not for some reason. After figuring out what the problem was the second try went just fine.

Good luck

Thanks again guys. I have completed the online app and made my donation, so I should be all set within the next week or so. Thanks again to all of you who contributed. It is so comforting to know that I can just come online, throw out a thread, and get solid, productive advice and guidance.
