Hey guys, I'm a newhire at DAL, and just started flying the MadDog... I'd like to avoid using the company DC's, so I'm looking for headset recommendations...

Ideally, I'd like something that will work well with both the MadDog and the ER. I'd also like something that will help preserve my hearing if at all possible.

On my old airplane, I used the Telex 5x5's but the molded hard plastic ear pieces destroyed my hearing...

What are you guys using that you like? Thanks!

You won't need a headset on the 80.

I encourage you to stay away from the molded earpiece/plantronics deal. That's what I have (75/76). Not very comfortable.

I'd buy the telex headset with the foam earpieces instead, for about $250. Don't waste money on an ANR headest...you'll wear them on only one ear anyway. And both cockpits are very quiet...besides, you'll take them off from 18,000 to TOD anyway, to use the hand mike/cockpit speaker. Especially on the ER. Welcome to Delta!

Where can you get the foam earpieces for the Telex 5X5? I have molded earpieces from my previous employer.

Hearing damage is done slowly over time. Once gone you can't get it back. Just because the MD-88 is quiet, you still need to take care of your ears. I have the Telex 850 and I wear it the entire flight. I will wear it with one ear uncovered for ground ops or maybe at cruise but usually over both ears. You can still have normal conversations with both ears covered. Even though I 've been careful and always worn hearing protection and used good headsets in 26 years of flying, my hearing is not what it once was. Do not buy a cheap headset. An ANR headset is a good investment in your long term health.

Maybe your hearing is better than I am, or i'm just old, but on the 737, it's much tougher to hear the other guy with both ears covered. I guess that's why we're paid a few bucks more than the 88...

What do you guys think of the noise level on the 767 comparing to the 73? I know the 73 is loud, but i just can't believe how loud it really is!

TELEX makes a good noise cancelling headset now, too...my reserve unit just bought them and they're nice

I would submit to you your mold is not done properly if your plantronics is not comfortable. I wore that exact setup for 20 years on 727's, 75/76 and 777 and would not have traded for anything else at any price. I never ever could tell it was there. Your results may differ.......

Go to www.headsetdr.com. The owner is a Delta dude. I bought a refurbished Telex 750 last summer and have been very pleased with it in the Maddog. I was on the "newhire budget" and the refurb 750 was in the budget. He may be able to repair your current headset. He has a drop off box in the pilot lounge in ATL. It is the white box on the back wall by the v-files. Be sure to mention you are a newhire for a discount.

anyone out there use the Bose QC2 setup at Delta? I used it at my last gig and am wondering if it's kosher at Big D. Most guys/gals I've seen there use the supplied headset over one ear.
