I am new to this board and I had a question regarding about the pay from going from F/O and upgrading to Captain. I saw on the cargo thread were someone had stated a question about if you are a 10 year F/0 and upgrade to Captain would your pay would just move over to the 10 year Captain pay and this was stated that is what happens. My question is this the same at the majors and regionals or is it not how it works and when you upgraded to Captain that you would indeed start out at 1st year Captain pay?

Depends on the airline, and union contract, if any.

If you are a 10 year FO and upgrade to captain, you then become a 10 year captain. The year designation is years at your company - not years in any given seat. There may be some exceptions at other carriers but I think what I just described is the "norm".

Ditto at NWA. But, I would'nt put it past an airlines mangagement to try to do (as an example) a 10 yr F/O who upgrades to Cpt for the first time, to get paid !st year Captain pay. Lowers their labor costs. Wouldn't be surprised at all.

Ryan International is the craziest way of getting paid. A ten year fo who upgrades to Captain gets 10 year Captain pay. Here's the catch. Every thing they do is by contract ie Apple Vacations, DOD, Suntrips. When ever you change contracts you go back to first year pay. You never stay on any one contract for more than a few years so you can never expect to make the higher payscale.

Great question, I had always wondered the samething but just assumed it was the number of years at the seat not with the company

Colgan used to be that way. Is not now.
Cathay IS that way. The day you get in the left seat, you start at first year CPT. pay.
