Are there any flight students out there with families? What advice would you offer?

Keep your family first. Don't sacrifice time with them to go flying, especially if you're considering a career out of it. You'll have plenty of time to make them wish you were around when you get that first flying job.

Aviation is hard enough without people in tow. Honestly if you don't have a few strong contacts at the regionals I would say that you don't have much of a chance of keeping a happy family or of making it anywhere. In addition you have to be able to endure years of unsurvivable wages. I hope your wife has a good job.

Aviation is difficult and opportunities can be fleeting and few. Unless you are able to throw your entire life's belongings into your car and hit the road at a moments notice it makes things more difficult. Wives and children require, money, safety, friends and family. Anyone can put forth the efforts to throw a hail Mary in hopes that you can find a good job locally but the odds of success are slim. Most likely you will be left with a huge bill and no saleable job skills. Just ask BMWMarv or Ninja. Or myself. I already have the ratings and experience but can't pursue the career anymore due to a growing family. We all have to make choices.

I knew plenty of guys when I was in flight school who have children and wives. I am married myself and went to ATP's 90 day program and was away from my wife for that period of time. It is hard, but it can be done. Plenty of people have. Don't let that keep you from what you want to do with the rest of your life. Some people do have a bad experience with aviation, that doesn't mean you will too. I changed carriers myself, and I should be at the airlines within the next 2-3 months.

I totally agree with that. Your family life comes first. But it can work as long as you talk about and just don't make any decisions without talking.
