looks somewhat like a lenticular cloud associated with mountain wave turbulance....is there a mountain range within 50 miles of that pic?

There is, about 15 miles away from the cloud to the east of the picture.

alto stratus is stratus between 6500ft and 20k ft. Being that the OP confirmed there is a mountain range near by, those do appear to be lenticular clouds, note the airfoil like shape
