Quote: I used to hang out with a bunch of ATL tower and Tracon controllers.

One of them once told me if a controller is ever a d***head to you, then ask them for a “time check”.

Has a way of turning their frown upside down!
The more you know.

I have at least a half dozen controller friends. What you need to do is ask for their operating initials. Every controller has two initials they pick that is unique to them at that facility. I’ve done this before when a controller tried to violate me. I included his initials along with facility name, frequency and time when filing an ASAP. Long story short, he was proven wrong and “retrained” (along with all the controllers at the facility), and was reprimanded for being belligerent on the frequency.

Quote: Or go full ICAO on them, and say "speak slowly, words twice".

You don’t have to go all the way to ICAO for that. Speak slowly and words twice is in the pilot controller glossary, which every US controller is supposed to know.
