Furlough Concerns, Cover Letters, etc.

I got furloughed back in January, and since then I have send out quite a few resumes and cover letters and applied to a dozen jobs. Since then I have had 1 job interview with a 121 carrier and only got a few responses from other companies with the standard "resume is on file". I believe I have quite a few contacts in the aviation industry, and that's how I landed past jobs and got my foot 'somewhat' into the door right now with some companies.

I know the state of the industry, I know it is though and very competitive right now! However, I truly believe right now that being a furloughed regional airline pilot is hurting me getting a job with a company flying piston engine airplanes. I have this image in my mind of HR or Chief Pilot looking at my resume thinking... "oh, this guy has only flown glass cockpit the past 2 years, he has no recency of experience flying single-pilot IFR in a piston twin, this guy will bail on us as soon as he gets a recall." Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes, I have flown very little in piston airplanes the past few years, but I want to get back into General Aviation flying and looking to get a job flying Part 135 freight, charter, etc. I have no intension's of returning to my airline IF I would get a recall. Since being furloughed I have rented a C172 and try and get up every other week (as unemployment funds permit), I am currently pursuing my ATP certificate in a Seneca, get back into flying steam gauges and approaches without a fancy autopilot and FMS. I'm trying to stay involved in the local aviation community, so I do have something to show for to employers that I have been staying current and continued to invest in my aviation career while on furlough.

I know every cover letter should be tailored towards the job you are seeking. Is it appropriate to state in the cover letter that you have no intentions of returning if recalled? Should I explain all the things I am doing while on furlough in my cover letter? I've seen some resumes list "Last 6 months, Last 3 Months" in their flight time column, is this something a furloughed guy should put on his resume?

Sorry for the lengthy post, just wanted to get some advice and opinions...

I would not state in a cover letter about recall rights and if you would or would not accept the recall. This is a question they would ask you in the interview. As for what you would like to put on the CV, that is up to you, however I don't think it would be a bad idea to show currency (hours) for previous 90 days. My 2C worth. Good luck from another guy in the cheeseline from OH.
