CNN is reporting that there is a UAL plane that ran off the runway after it reported smoke in the cockpit. The audio portion of the video isn't working for me, so no further information. Plane looks completely intact, shows passengers and crew coming down the slide, smiling and taking pictures, so thankfully it seems everyone is OK.

10 second story on CNN said smoke in the cabin/cockpit/ passenger's pants? forced emergency landing which looks like the nose went off the runway/ taxiway.

I wonder how many people texted during the landing that their lives were over ( a- la the SWA airlines story right before this one on CNN. Please turn on all your electronic crap when it matters the most)?

Here's the AP report:

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS -- A United Airlines flight from New Orleans to San Francisco returned to the New Orleans airport within minutes of taking off Monday after rocking back and forth.

Copilot Ronald Lee Young told an Associated Press reporter aboard Flight 497 that he landed on backup systems, with minimal steering and braking ability, after the plane lost all electronics. He said the plane, heavy with fuel, ran off the runway and blew a tire.

As soon as the flight was on the ground, flight attendants shouted "Leave everything. Get out!"

Passengers slid down the front and back slides.

A few passengers walked to an ambulance after a call for anyone with injuries. The injuries appeared to be minor, such as abrasions from the slide.
Looks like everyone safe - good job!

All 100 passengers and five crew members on Flight 497 were safe, airline spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said.

Copilot Ronald Lee Young told an Associated Press reporter aboard the Airbus 319 that he landed on backup systems, with minimal steering and braking ability, after the plane lost all electronics.

Great job...
Why would the FO be giving quotes to the media after something like this?

Hopefully he is either their aviation correspondent or a union/company spokesman. On the CAL side we have union ID backers that tell you step by step what to do after an incident. Call the union, secure the paperwork, talk to no one!

That said, great job getting the airplane back on the ground and demonstrating again why we should be paid what we are really worth!

Sounds like the reporter was a pax...probably wasn't waving his press creds around.
