Commercial Flying Definition

Hey all,

I'm curious if someone can point me to an official definition of what commercial flying is. I'm a 121 pilot subject to the requirements of 121.471 (30 and 7, etc). I have been asked to instruct in and tow gliders at my glider club. Both of these are volunteer positions and are not paid. Does this constitute commercial flying by definition?

It's worth mentioning that private pilots can now tow gliders for compensation or hire (you read that right).

FAR 119 covers what is considered a commercial operation. However, I believe 61.133 covers your priveledges and limitations with a commercial license. If you are doing something that neither excercises the priveledges of of your commercial ticket or falls under 119.1 as a commercial operation, I cant see as how it could be called commercial flight time.

I really believe that the real answer is the fact that you are not recieving compensation to fly. That would mean you are not using your commercial priveledges...just private.

Generally, unpaid flight instruction is not considered "other commercial flying" for the purpose of Part 135 and 121 time limitations.
