Spirit Airlines to charge $5 to print boarding passes

Spirit Airlines said it will charge $5 if a gate agent has to print a passenger's boarding pass starting this fall, The Associated Press reported.

The $5 boarding fee started Tuesday for all flights booked for travel Nov. 1 and after. Spirit also said it is lowering fares by $5 each way.

To avoid paying the fee for now, Spirit passengers can print their own boarding pass at home or use a check-in kiosk at the airport. But starting next June, Spirit said it will also begin charging $1 to print a boarding pass at the airport kiosk, the article said.

Spirit said it would waive the fee in cities where it does not have kiosks, or if a customer is unable to use the kiosk to print a boarding pass.

Last August, Spirit began charging as much as $45 for carry-on bags. So far, no other U.S. carriers have adopted a fee for carry-on bags.

If you (the public) don't like it: print it out yourself, don't buy a ticket on NK, use your smart phone, etc......

I didn't think it would go over well... but people really seem to like it. (I’ve actually had a few pax thank me?!?!)

1. speeds up the boarding/deplaning process.
2. no "fights" break-out over bin space; actually has brought back a little bit of civility during boarding.
3. fee= profit

I'm sure there are many "other" things about it but most seem to like it; especially the flight attendants!

If the public will buy into things like that, it will do all of the things you say and more. Fares will be lower (this will be hard to convince the public however because they really don't shop around) and the airline will be able to keep more of the revenue that they generate vice giving it to the idiots in DC. The problem is the stigma associated with fees... I really hope Spirit is successful in this, and that it somehow translates into more money for the companies and ultimately us...

I agree! It has worked and I must commend management for it. Flight are always full, the boarding and deplanning process is fast (I can barely get to leave the cockpit during deplanning because of passengers leaving quickly), flight attendants have a MUCH easier job, and the company is making big $$$.

Too bad for American, Delta, US Airways, United and JetBlue who promissed to Congress to never follow suit! They DIDN'T think it would work! LOL.

There is no such thing as a promise in DC.

Wouldn't you want to save $5 by checking in from your iphone or droid? I would. Sounds good to me.

I can honestly say; I'm not really fond of the product, but there is a segment of the public that "eats" this type of service up? It is, what it is.... and has done well in Europe, Easy Jet , Ryan Air.

I just do my job to the best of my abilities regardless if I'm hauling 218 screaming monkeys or one princess..... and that’s all I can do? The rest is left up to someone(s) with a higher paygrade
