I never had my shirt tail cut, but I can't legally solo the airliner I currently fly, so maybe I don't qualify.

Same here. The only expensive clothes I buy are Carhartts.

Mine was never cut by my cfi and the school I taught at wouldn't allow it for liability reasons. It's a shame, it is an awesome day in an aviators life.
