Al, I realized my mistake as it will cause RJ-Backpack-mania, but my question is legit. The use will be off-duty travel (hence the airline overhead) and used on weekends with wife and little ones

Who cares? Based on your profile it doesn't seem like you fly for a regional anyway. I take a backpack on all my trips (most of my coworkers do too.) It's much more convenient than a laptop bag and when I get to a destination, an can empty my work stuff out of it and have a handy daypack for hiking, sightseeing, etc.

Mine is very similar to the second one you posted.

Looks good, you might be able to fit your skate board in there too! Now I know how the old guys must have felt when they first saw "us" rolling our suite cases and flight bags around.
