Quote: I work at Purple too. Family in Looavul. Just an observation, tongue in cheek at that.
This is probably the best scenario. Live in Louisville and work for Fred.

Fly for purple but live in STL!

That's for sure. Then again, FedEx has a crapload of deadheads, so you can often get them to pay for a ticket from your home, on a paid day of work, to start your trip. Which is probably why over 60 percent of us commute. I avoid jumpseating like the plague (except occasionally with us), and just got my Delta million miler status. Whoopee?

I have no idea if UPS has many front/back end deadheads, so can't compare.

Yes we keep WN and the others busy here in SDF...

Quote: I fly for another freight hauler and was wondering how FedEx and UPS compare regarding their employment terms and conditions. I am not as concerned about pay as I am scheduling ( bidding process , bid lines ) , lifestyle , basing , commuting , jumpseating and hotel arrangements. I`d appreciate it if any other cargo / freight pilot could comment or add to the discussion. It appears FedEx and UPS set the standard regarding quality of life while flying at night. Thanks in advance.
Apply at both if get a chance.
When was looking, wanted either FedEx or UPS. Ended up at brown before a purple call. Had and have many, many friends at both. Certainly differences, but generally we have much in common. UPS bids 56 days at a time in 28 day blocks. When I listen to each others gripes, sound very familiar and similar. We each have our specialty gripes though, but same at every employer.

Think you ought to really consider the business futures of the two companies in the markets they compete, and where the future threats are emerging to their strength in those markets. (Would not stop from applying to both, but keep evaluating all the way to touchdown).

Also, UPS still has 32 awaiting recall and coming up on four years on the street.
UPS pilot population is declining. No airplane purchases even contemplated.
Best of luck!

I agree with SaltyDog, apply to both FedEx and UPS, and if one or both call, you cannot go wrong as far as pay, benefits, equipment. For that matter, also apply to United, Delta and American. Whoever calls first, go for it. Don't wait around for cargo carriers to call, while the pax carriers are hiring thousands.

FedEx isn't hiring for now. According to the company, no hiring for 12-18 months, but that could, and most likely will change.

UPS has the 32 on furlough, with the good news of recalls starting. Hopefully they do the right thing and get all those guys/gals back on property ASAP.

And to the OP, I agree with your statement of FDX and UPS setting the standards for pilot pay/QOL for cargo carriers. One more carrier on that list could also be Atlas, which is currently hiring.

Good luck to you.
