Good news. Shut those scum bags down. "Just feeding my family" is no excuse for those who chose to be a part of that disgusting operation. If they somehow get past the governments, the companies need to bury them in capacity and fare wars and yes, we very much can afford to do so, quite easily, while they are young and growing. Let every single flight they add be a devistating loss to their ponzi scheme endless growth bottom line until their investors cash out at huge losses and their employees hit the streets because that's what they are trying to do to all of us. We have to abandon the MBA insanity of "route by route profitability" on a short term basis and just bleed those dirt bags out.

Senators Ask DOT to Protect U.S. Airline Jobs, Reject Gaming of U.S.-EU Open Skies Agreement

Thursday, March 13, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC—A bipartisan group of 38 Senators today urged the Department of Transportation to ensure U.S. airline jobs are protected, and U.S. law and aviation trade agreements are not violated, when considering Norwegian Air International’s application for a foreign air carrier permit.

Led by Sens. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), the Senators conveyed their employee protection concerns to DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx. “The U.S.-EU Open Skies Agreement was a historic agreement that not only expanded opportunities for consumers and businesses, but protected our high labor standards,” said Senator Schatz. “NAI’s permit application to the DOT is concerning, and we need to uphold the integrity of the bilateral agreement and the labor standards that protect American jobs,” he said.

“NAI’s structure raises several serious questions about what employment protections will apply to NAI’s workforce,” the Senators wrote. “We strongly urge you to examine this arrangement to ensure its full compliance with the U.S.-EU Open Skies Agreement labor provisions and consistency with U.S. law.”

TTD President Edward Wytkind, who will testify today before the Senate Commerce aviation subcommittee on this and other global aviation issues, thanked the Senators for taking a stand. “I appreciate the efforts of 38 Senators who have joined us in raising concerns about the NAI application and its far-reaching implications for U.S. airlines and employees,” he said. “Clearly momentum is on our side as we build opposition to this flag of convenience airline scheme that has no place in our aviation trade relationship with Europe.”

NAI will be a Norwegian company by name only as it will register its aircraft in Ireland, evade the laws of Norway and hire crews based in Thailand under individual contracts governed by the laws of Singapore. NAI’s operating plan, as detailed in its application to the DOT, would violate the terms and clear intent of the labor provisions (Article 17 bis) embodied in the U.S.-EU Open Skies Agreement that embrace “high labor standards.”

“If NAI is the face of liberalized U.S.-EU aviation trade, we’ll take a pass,” Wytkind said. “The Obama Administration must reject NAI’s application as it violates our laws and circumvents the U.S.-EU trade agreement.”
Now that's what I'm talking about... even if it is an election year for some of those politicos.

For the first two months of 2014, Dubai International Airport has seen more passengers come and go than any other airport in the world — a claim formerly held by London Heathrow. Lead by aggressive expansion of Emirates and FlyDubai airlines, Dubai handled 1.8 million more passengers during the period over Heathrow.

It should be noted that London isn't the most pleasant place to visit during the winter months, but Dubai's passenger numbers represent a 13.5 percent increase over last year. This is on top of a 15.2 percent growth from 2012 to 2013. Sustained growth throughout the year would certainly give Dubai the full-year title for the first time.

Does that figure represent passengers transiting OMDB or passing through immigration, or a combination of both?

A few weeks ago in my commercial ground school at the university where I teach I told the students about this, and they were totally puzzled as to why I would even suggest they should be concerned about this.

It was met with comments like "OMG I studied abroad in Spain last year and it was so fun! It would be awesome to work for a Eurpean airline!" and "I backpacked around Europe two summers ago and flying Ryanair all over Europe was so cheap!!! why wouldn't this be a good thing????"

Seriously, it's time to weep for the future of this country, not just this industry...

When did young people/kids, as a whole, really understand such complex issues? 1980s? 1960s? 1940s?

Yeah but what age were people still "kids" back then as well? Today we have millions of "26 year old children" that think "we live in a democracy" with zero grasp on anything who somehow convince their parents (and the government) to pay 6 figures to extend their childhood with a reading list of free common knowledge available anywhere that nets them a massive negative ROI. "Kids" that age have never been more entitled or ignorant. Equating the labor busting NAI flag of convenience scheme with backpacking through Europe is all that needs to be said for those idiots.

Keep up the pressure, it DOES make a difference. Gotta keep on fighting, but we can win these battles.

https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/23...-quit-ireland/

This is a result of the effect of pressure by ALPA and A4A to garner support via the petition and a joint letter from members of Congress.

(Yes, there was support from US entities that lent support to Assaereo in Italy)

Thanks for the support and keep it going for our profession!
