this article explains what happened. The pilot had to quickly avoid collision with the glider and stalled. The article says it "maneuvered quickly trying to avoid the glider and stalled the engine, and nose dived" but we can read between the lines of bad reporting.

I've never flown out of LaGrange, I doubt there is a control tower, but I would think they all had radios?

Did -nobody- mention they were going to be towing a glider across the runway?

This kind of stuff makes me sick to my stomach. It should be so easily avoided with just a little bit of communication and common sense. But instead there are 3 dead people, on a clear day in the traffic pattern.

Authorities identified the victims, all from Peachtree City, as:
  • 60-year-old Vincent Michael Rossetti
  • 69-year-old Willy Lutz

Civil Air Patrol glider under tow initiated take-off roll with Baron on final. The Baron to avoid a collision, pitched up and stalled. We must wait for the final investigation results but this doesn't look good for the CAP pilots regardless if no comm was heard from the Baron.

FAR 91.113(g) Landing. Aircraft, while on final approach to land or while landing, have the right-of-way over other aircraft in flight or operating on the surface, except that they shall not take advantage of this rule to force an aircraft off the runway surface which has already landed and is attempting to make way for an aircraft on final approach. When two or more aircraft are approaching an airport for the purpose of landing, the aircraft at the lower altitude has the right-of-way, but it shall not take advantage of this rule to cut in front of another which is on final approach to land or to overtake that aircraft.
